During the Spring and Autumn period, Xu Chen, a minister of the Jin state, was on a diplomatic mission and passed through Ji. There, he saw a peasant couple who worked diligently and respected each other. The wife brought her husband lunch to the field and offered it to him respectfully. The husband accepted it with dignity and ate it. Only after he had finished eating did the wife leave. Xu Chen was deeply moved and recommended the couple to Duke Wen of Jin, praising their virtue. This story is still told today and serves as an example of harmonious marital relationships. Later, the story was retold in various versions, but always with the wish for a harmonious cohabitation of spouses. Over the long course of history, stories of respect and reverence in marriage have emerged again and again and have become a beautiful example in traditional Chinese culture.
