During the Spring and Autumn period, Zhi Boyao, a minister of the Jin state, was arrogant and domineering. He was eventually killed by Zhao Xiangzi, Han Kangzi, and Wei Huanzi. Yu Rang, a loyal retainer of Zhi Bo, vowed to avenge his master. He twice attempted to assassinate Zhao Xiangzi, but was discovered and spared both times. Finally, to disguise himself, Yu Rang swallowed hot coals and painted himself with lacquer, changing his appearance. He tried again to assassinate Zhao Xiangzi, but was once again discovered. Yu Rang knew he would die, and accepted his fate calmly. After his death, Zhao Xiangzi praised his loyalty and gave him a grand burial.
