It is said that in ancient times there was an upright magistrate who was diligent and loved the people, always thinking of the people. Under his governance, the local people lived and worked in peace and contentment, and the social atmosphere was good. But he also severely cracked down on crimes and showed no mercy to those who committed many evil deeds. He always praised the good and condemned the evil, and the rewards and punishments were clearly defined. Once, a wealthy merchant bullied the people because of his wealth and power. After learning about this, the magistrate immediately ordered his arrest and confiscated all his property, which he distributed to the people who had been bullied. He also personally wrote a notice, posted at the gate of the county government office, detailing the merchant’s crimes and praising the people who stood up and exposed the merchant’s evil deeds. This approach was unanimously praised by the people, and they all praised him as an upright and honest official.
