Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a highly respected sage who dedicated his life to doing good deeds, helping the poor, and was revered by the people as a god. On every festival, people would gather in the valley where he once lived to worship and pray for peace and good fortune. After the sage's death, people still missed him, and they built a temple at his tomb, where incense was constantly burning. Many people came from afar to worship and express their respect and gratitude. Among them was a young scholar who studied day and night to pass the imperial examinations, but he repeatedly failed and was very discouraged. One day, he came to the sage's temple and saw that it was full of incense and that countless people came to worship. The scholar thought that the sage, who was revered by so many people, must have a unique charm. So the scholar also devoutly worshipped, praying that the sage would bless him to pass the examinations. He vowed that if he succeeded, he would continue to speak for the people and help those in need. Soon after, the scholar did pass the imperial examinations. He kept his vow, spoke for the people, and made many contributions to the country, earning the love of the people. His life, too, like that of the sage, became an object of worship.
