Origin Story
During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the imperial court was nestled in the south. Yu Yi, the governor of Nanchang, harbored ambitions of leading a northern expedition to reclaim lost territories in the north. His subordinate, Fan Wang, however, believed the time wasn't ripe and suggested first training troops and accumulating supplies. Fan Wang wrote to Emperor Cheng of Jin, stating: ‘In the north, various armies are scrambling for advantageous positions and resources, similar to fish swimming in a narrow stream. Military campaigns would be difficult and cause many casualties.’ Fan Wang believed a hasty campaign would result in unnecessary losses and that only after thorough preparation would success be guaranteed. His advice was ultimately heeded, preventing an unnecessary war and laying the groundwork for future campaigns.
