The Three Obediences and Four Virtues
Explanation
The three obediences and four virtues refer to the moral standards for women in feudal society.
Origin Story
In ancient Chinese society, women were of low status and were considered appendages of men. A woman's life was bound by the three obediences and four virtues. The three obediences and four virtues mean: before marriage, obey your father; after marriage, obey your husband; after the death of your husband, obey your son; womanly virtue, womanly speech, womanly appearance, womanly skill. These eight words almost sum up the entire fate of women in ancient China. Even a heroine like Hua Mulan had to return to her family after the war and live an ordinary life. The three obediences and four virtues, to a large extent, restricted the freedom and development of women.
