The rabbit dies, the fox grieves
Explanation
A metaphor for sadness over the death or misfortune of a fellow creature; also for worry due to shared interests.
Origin Story
During the Southern Song Dynasty, the famous anti-Jin generals Li Quan and Yang Miaozhen led the rebel army to many victories, creating a huge momentum. However, the Southern Song court was wary of their strength and eventually forced them to surrender. Later, Li Quan was defeated and killed, Yang Miaozhen was heartbroken and sighed, "The fox cries when the hare dies, Li Quan and I were both anti-Jin patriots, and now he has died on the battlefield, how can I survive alone?" This is the origin of the idiom "the rabbit dies, the fox grieves". Yang Miaozhen also died heroically later, becoming a symbol of anti-Jin heroes like Li Quan. Their story has been passed down through generations, warning later generations to help each other in times of difficulty and face hardships together.
