Explanation
Jealousy of the talented and envy of the capable refers to envying and hating those who are more excellent than oneself, and cannot tolerate the existence of those who are stronger than oneself.
Origin Story
It is said that there was a famous general named Pang Juan in the Wei Kingdom, he was skilled in martial arts and strategy, and he was deeply trusted and reused by the king of Wei. However, Pang Juan was insidious and mean, jealous of talented people. He once studied military strategy under Master Gui Gu Zi, and was a classmate and good friend of Sun Bin. After graduation, Pang Juan was first appointed by the King of Wei, while Sun Bin, because of his poor background, could not find a suitable position for a while. Pang Juan worried that Sun Bin would surpass himself in the future, so he made things difficult for him everywhere, and even framed Sun Bin, giving him a binxing (removing his kneecaps). Sun Bin suffered greatly, but always remained calm and wise. Later, the Qi Kingdom launched a war against the Wei Kingdom, the King of Qi heard of Sun Bin's talent, and spared no expense in inviting Sun Bin to Qi. Sun Bin formulated a precise battle plan for Qi, using ingenious strategies, and defeated the Wei army, and Pang Juan also died in this battle. The life of Pang Juan is a typical example of a tragedy caused by jealousy of talent. Because he was afraid that Sun Bin would surpass him, he ultimately went on a path to self-destruction. This story tells us that being jealous of talented people and capable people will not only hurt others, but also ultimately hurt oneself.
