Bīn zhì rú guī means that guests feel as if they are at home. It describes warm and thoughtful hospitality.
Origin Story
During the Spring and Autumn period, Zi Chan, a minister from the state of Zheng, was sent on a diplomatic mission to the state of Jin. To show his disrespect, the ruler of Jin deliberately housed Zi Chan in a dilapidated guesthouse. However, Zi Chan didn’t complain but instead ordered his men to remove the walls of the guesthouse, thereby making it seem more spacious and airy. The ruler of Jin was surprised and asked why he had done so. Zi Chan replied, ‘In Zheng we always value etiquette and hospitality, and our guests are always made to feel at home. However, your humble guesthouse makes the Zheng envoys feel unwelcome, so we took the initiative to improve it.’ The ruler of Jin was ashamed and promptly apologised to Zi Chan and provided him with comfortable accommodation. From then on, the relationship between the two states became harmonious.
