Origin Story
During the Warring States period in ancient China, King Zhao Xiaocheng of Zhao was an incompetent ruler who often made a fuss over trivial matters. One time, the kingdom of Yan was about to invade, but the King was preoccupied with a missing valuable jade pendant belonging to his favorite concubine. The king ordered a citywide search, neglecting the impending war. Days were spent finding the pendant, only to be discovered in an inconspicuous corner. By that time, Yan’s army had already approached the city walls. King Zhao belatedly realised the severity of his actions and his neglect of the war. Zhao suffered a great defeat. This event became a typical example used to describe overreacting to minor issues and ignoring larger problems.
