To hoard goods and wait for the opportunity to sell them at a high price. Usually refers to the unfair behavior of merchants in order to obtain excessive profits.
Origin Story
During the Warring States period, there was a wealthy merchant named Zhang San. He heard that there would be a bumper harvest this year, so he bought a large amount of grain and hoarded it in his warehouse. He believed that when the price of grain rose, he could sell it at a high price and make a huge profit. Sure enough, a few months later, due to a drought, the price of grain soared. Zhang San sold the hoarded grain at a high price and made a fortune. At the same time, however, many people suffered from hunger because they could not afford grain, and social contradictions became increasingly acute. Zhang San’s behavior was eventually punished by the court. This story tells us that hoarding not only disrupts the order of the market economy, but also causes serious social problems, ultimately harming the interests of all the people.
