He who is righteous will receive much help; he who is unrighteous will receive little help
Explanation
De means to be righteous; Shi means to be unrighteous; Gua means few. It means that if one is righteous and complies with the will of the people, one will receive support and help; otherwise, one will be isolated and helpless.
Origin Story
During the Spring and Autumn period, the state of Qi attacked the state of Lu. The ruler of Lu asked the state of Jin for help. The ruler of Jin summoned his ministers to discuss the matter, with some advocating for helping Lu and others advocating for remaining neutral. A minister analyzed: 'Qi is tyrannical and kills innocent people, losing the people's hearts; while Lu is just and enjoys the people's love. Therefore, Qi will have little help, and Lu will have much help. We should help Lu.' Duke Wen of Jin accepted this advice, sent troops to help Lu, and eventually won the victory. This is a true illustration of 'He who is righteous will receive much help; he who is unrighteous will receive little help.'
