扫地以尽 sweep the ground clean
Explanation
To sweep the ground clean; completely destroy, leaving no trace. It also means to completely lose face and prestige.
Origin Story
At the end of the Warring States period, after years of diligent governance, the Kingdom of Qin grew increasingly powerful. King Zheng of Qin, a man of great talent and strategic acumen, determined to unify all of China. He led his armies to conquer the six kingdoms of Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan, and Qi one after another. The once glorious six kingdoms were now in the hands of Qin. Palaces were reduced to ruins, royal families became prisoners, and the former prosperity was gone, as if swept away by a giant hand, leaving no trace. Although the six kingdoms were destroyed, their cultures, institutions, and the minds of their people still had a profound impact on later generations. This is the charm of history: it contains both rise and fall, and also inheritance and development.
