In the late Western Han Dynasty, the court was corrupt and treacherous officials were in power. Feng Meng, an upright official, witnessed the atrocities of Wang Mang's usurpation of power and was heartbroken. He knew that Wang Mang was cruel and that continuing to stay by his side would only lead to his death. Therefore, he chose a dark and windy night, silently took off his official hat, hung it on the city gate, quietly left the officialdom, took his family, and went far away, beginning a reclusive life. From then on, he was far away from the political vortex and lived a peaceful and free life. His act of resigning became a model for later scholars and officials, and also a well-known historical anecdote.
