It is said that during the Han Dynasty, General Li Ling, leading 5,000 foot soldiers, penetrated deep into Xiongnu territory and, against all odds, decisively defeated 30,000 Xiongnu troops. The Xiongnu Chanyu, enraged, mobilized 80,000 cavalry to encircle Li Ling's forces. The Han soldiers fought bravely, suffering heavy casualties. At a critical moment, Li Ling raised his arm and shouted, "For the glory of the Han Dynasty, for our great land, fight to the death against the Xiongnu bandits!" Inspired by this rousing call, the soldiers' morale soared, and they fought fiercely. Though outnumbered, they resisted to the death, displaying remarkable fighting spirit.
