Literary rivals
Explanation
Wenren Xiangqing refers to the phenomenon that writers look down on each other, which is caused by factors such as the general competitiveness, vanity, and jealousy among writers.
Origin Story
During the Northern Song Dynasty, the great literati Su Shi and Zhang Lei were both outstanding figures in the literary world. Both were incredibly talented, yet the phenomenon of 'wenren xiangqing' was inevitable. Once, Zhang Lei wrote a poem and sent it to Su Shi for critique. After reading it, Su Shi burst into laughter, saying, "This poem is like a clear-steamed Wang Xizhi!" The words were full of playful mockery. While Zhang Lei responded with a smile, he was secretly displeased. He believed Su Shi's poetry also had flaws and pointed out inappropriate word choices in Su Shi's work. The two exchanged barbs, highlighting the subtle competition between literati and illustrating the old saying, "文人相轻,自古而然." This story shows that even among highly talented writers, mutual appreciation and respect are rare, with competition and slighting more common.
