Origin Story
During the Tang Dynasty, there was a famous writer named Han Yu, known for his powerful prose. One day, Han Yu attended a court banquet. During the banquet, a minister suggested to the emperor that a magnificent palace be built. His reasoning was that it would demonstrate national power and enhance the emperor's reputation. Upon hearing this, all the officials nodded in agreement and expressed their approval. However, Han Yu remained silent. Everyone assumed that Han Yu also approved of the proposal, so the emperor asked Han Yu, "Han Aiqing, what are your thoughts on building the palace?" Han Yu knew that directly opposing the idea would offend many, and it might not be successful in dissuading them. But staying silent also seemed irresponsible. Therefore, after pondering for a moment, he slowly said, "Your servant has no comment on this matter." This statement stunned all the court officials. They didn't understand what Han Yu meant. In fact, Han Yu's intention was to express his disapproval of the proposal. However, considering the complex political situation at the court, he didn’t want to make a rash statement and cause unnecessary trouble. He cleverly used the phrase "wú cóng zhì huì" to express his opinion. This avoided direct conflict and subtly conveyed his disapproval. Ultimately, after careful consideration, the emperor rejected the proposal.
