暮鼓朝钟 evening drum and morning bell
Explanation
Originally, "mùgǔ zhāozhōng" referred to the beating of drums in the evening and the ringing of bells in the morning in temples to indicate the time. Later, it became a metaphor for words that can wake people up and make them think.
Origin Story
In ancient times, an old temple was located at the foot of a mountain. Every morning, the sonorous sound of the bell resounded through the valley, awakening the sleeping village; every time dusk fell, the low sound of the drum echoed in the mountains, reminding people of the end of the day. This morning and evening bell not only told the time, but also was like a kind elder, using its melodious sound to warn people that time flies and that every moment should be cherished. Xiaoming, a young monk, when he first entered the temple, always felt that the daily morning and evening bells were monotonous and boring, but as time went by, he slowly understood the meaning of the morning and evening bells. It was not merely to tell the time, but to remind people to cherish their time, to make progress in their practice, and not to waste their youth. Therefore, he studied Buddhism even harder and continuously improved himself in his practice.
