渐入佳境 jiàn rù jiā jìng Gradually entering a better state

Explanation

It means the situation gradually improves, or the interest gradually increases.

Origin Story

Gu Kaizhi, a famous painter from the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was talented and excelled at portraiture, but he was rather casual in his life. Once, a friend gave him a bundle of sugarcane. As Gu Kaizhi was enthusiastically admiring a landscape painting, he began to eat the sugarcane from the bottom end. Curiously, his friend asked him how it tasted. Gu Kaizhi smiled and said, “It's getting better and better!” Indeed, the bottom end of the sugarcane is sweeter than the top. Gu Kaizhi didn't do this randomly; he knew something about sugarcane. Later, people used the expression "jiàn rù jiā jìng" (渐入佳境) to describe things gradually improving or interest gradually intensifying. Like a journey in life, it may initially be filled with challenges and hardships, but with persistence, one will gradually experience the fun and sense of accomplishment, eventually reaching a satisfying state. Just like Gu Kaizhi savoring the sugarcane, it might seem somewhat bland at first, but the more you savor it, the sweeter it becomes, until you experience the sugarcane's most delicious taste.
