It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there lived a scholar named Li Bai in the city of Chang'an. He was erudite and talented, but also somewhat arrogant. One day, Li Bai was playing in the suburbs and happened to meet a down-and-out scholar, and the two began to debate about poetry and literature. Seeing Li Bai’s arrogance, the scholar rebuked him angrily: “You’re nothing but a pedantic scholar, what’s so great about you! Today, I’ll teach you a lesson by calling your name!” Li Bai didn’t care, retorting sarcastically: “Am I Li Bai to be blamed by such vermin as you? Today I’ll let you see my power!” The two quarreled and finally fought. Bystanders persuaded them to stop the quarrel. After this incident, Li Bai also realized that he was too arrogant, and he behaved more modestly after that.
