罢黜百家 bà chù bǎi jiā Reject all schools of thought

Explanation

The idiom "To reject all schools of thought" means to 'abandon all other schools of thought and only promote Confucianism'. It is a metaphor for accepting only one point of view and rejecting other viewpoints. Later, it was also used to refer to accepting only one form and rejecting all others.

Origin Story

During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, in order to strengthen central power, Emperor Wu adopted Dong Zhongshu's suggestion to implement a policy of “rejecting all schools of thought and only respecting Confucianism.” Emperor Wu ordered that only Confucianism could be studied throughout the country, and all other schools were banned. From then on, Confucianism became the mainstream ideology of Chinese society. Emperor Wu did this because he believed that Confucianism could maintain the feudal ruling order and strengthen central power. This policy led to an unprecedented development of Confucianism in the Han Dynasty and also influenced the direction of Chinese culture and society, playing an important role in Chinese history.

Usage

zhè ge chéng yǔ cháng yòng lái pī píng nà xiē gù zhí jǐ jiàn, bù tīng qǔ bù tóng yì jiàn de rén. lì rú, zài gōng zuò zhōng, rú guǒ yǒu rén zhǐ gù zì jǐ de xiǎng fǎ, bù jiē shòu tóng shì de jiàn yì, jiù kě yǐ shuō tā "bà chù bǎi jiā".

This idiom is often used to criticize those who are stubborn and refuse to listen to different opinions. For example, in the workplace, if someone only cares about their own ideas and does not accept the suggestions of their colleagues, you can say that they are "rejecting all schools of thought."

Examples

tā zuò shì tài guò jiào tiáo, zǒng shì "bà chù bǎi jiā", bù kěn tīng qǔ bié rén de yì jiàn.

He is too dogmatic in his work, always "rejecting all schools of thought" and unwilling to listen to other people's opinions.

gǎi gé kāi fàng hòu, wǒ guó bù zài "bà chù bǎi jiā", ér shì bǎi huā qí fàng, bǎi jiā zhēng míng.

After the reform and opening up, China no longer "rejected all schools of thought", but instead promoted a hundred flowers blooming and a hundred schools of thought contending.

tā men zhǐ guān zhù zì jǐ de guān diǎn, duì qí tā rén de yì jiàn yī gài "bà chù bǎi jiā", zhè zhǒng zuò fǎ shì bù míng zhì de.
