置之度外 zhì zhī dù wài put aside

Explanation

It means not to take one's own life and death or interests to heart.

Origin Story

After Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty unified China, the country was basically stable, but Kuyin of Xizhou and Gongsun Shu of Shu still held separate territories. Ministers repeatedly urged him to launch attacks, but the Emperor said: "Let's put these two aside for now!" He considered their forces negligible and would not affect his rule, so he focused his efforts on consolidating power and developing the economy. History proved the Emperor's strategy correct. He finally pacified the country and established the powerful Eastern Han Dynasty. This story teaches us that some things, though seemingly important on the surface, can be temporarily set aside if they do not have a substantial impact on the overall situation, allowing one to concentrate on more important matters. It highlights Emperor Guangwu's strategic vision and decisiveness and shows that setting aside problems is a strategic choice, not simple negligence.
