Origin Story
During the Western Han Dynasty, Su Wu was detained by the Xiongnu for nineteen years. The Xiongnu repeatedly sent people to persuade him to surrender, including Li Ling, a Han general who had defected to the Xiongnu. Li Ling attempted to persuade Su Wu to surrender by citing the example of his two brothers, but Su Wu remained unmoved, upholding his integrity. Eventually, Su Wu returned to Han, and when Li Ling saw him off, he felt overwhelming shame and remorse, for he had betrayed his country, while Su Wu had remained steadfastly loyal. Li Ling's experience became a classic example of loyalty and betrayal, helping people better understand the meaning of "overwhelming shame and remorse."
