During the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Jing of Qi asked Yan Zi how to govern the country so that it could prosper. Yan Zi replied: “The monarch should rule by virtue and benevolence, cherishing the people. As for the ministers, they should also strive to learn and emulate the virtuous, constantly improving their moral cultivation and abilities, so that they can better assist the monarch and contribute to the country.” Duke Jing was deeply moved by Yan Zi's reply, and said he would study and practice it diligently. From then on, Qi enjoyed peace and prosperity, and the people lived in peace and happiness, making it a model among the vassal states.
