In the late Qing Dynasty, war broke out in a certain area, and the people were displaced and suffered great hardship. In a small village, the once prosperous villagers were forced to do things that violated morality for the sake of survival. A young woman named Alan came from a poor family, her parents had passed away, and she had hoped to achieve prosperity through her own hard work, but she repeatedly experienced misfortunes. First, her house was robbed by bandits, and then a drought destroyed her harvest. The desperate Alan finally had to resort to prostitution to support herself. She cried every day and suffered inwardly, but she had to continue for her survival. This story is the most authentic example of the idiom “bī liáng wéi chāng”, it reflects the social unrest and the miserable lives of the people at that time, and shows the helplessness and struggle of human nature.
