Origin Story
战国时期，齐国名将孙膑和庞涓同为鬼谷子弟子。庞涓嫉妒孙膑的才华，设计陷害孙膑，导致孙膑被剜去膝盖骨，遭受酷刑。后孙膑逃到齐国，成为齐国军师。在马陵之战中，孙膑利用“减灶诱敌”之计，大败庞涓。庞涓被围困，兵败如山倒，士兵们哭喊着逃窜，惨叫声、哭喊声、哀嚎声，混杂在一起，宛如鬼哭狼嚎一般。庞涓走投无路，最终自杀。这场战役，因其惨烈悲壮的景象，为后人所记，鬼哭狼嚎也因此成为形容混乱凄惨景象的成语。
During the Warring States period, Sun Bin and Pang Juan were both disciples of Gui Guzi, a famous scholar. Pang Juan, jealous of Sun Bin's talent, plotted against Sun Bin, leading to Sun Bin's mutilation and torture. Later, Sun Bin escaped to Qi and became a military strategist for the kingdom. In the Battle of Maling, Sun Bin used the strategy of “reducing the cooking pots to lure the enemy”, to defeat Pang Juan. Pang Juan was surrounded, his army collapsed, soldiers wept and fled, and cries and wails mixed together – a true “ghost crying and wolf howling”. In despair, Pang Juan committed suicide. This battle, known for its cruelty and tragedy, was passed down as a memory, and “ghost crying and wolf howling” became an idiom to describe chaotic and tragic scenes.
