Origin Story
At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, Yu Yan served as the magistrate of Donghun. He was an upright and courageous man who enforced the law but did not pay attention to details and lived a simple life. Once, relatives of Wang Mang's favorite concubine, Wei Shi, oppressed the people. Yu Yan was not afraid of power and threw them into prison. This news reached Wang Mang, who was furious but could do nothing. Later, Yu Yan was promoted to magistrate of Fuping because he dared to admonish the corrupt official. During his time as an official in Luoyang, he again offended the powerful and eventually committed suicide. Although Yu Yan's end is regrettable, his spirit of not fearing power, upholding justice, and not paying attention to details is worth learning from future generations.
