To be benevolent is not to be rich
Explanation
"Wei ren bu fu" is a famous saying from Mencius, meaning that if a person wholeheartedly pursues goodness and righteousness, then he may not achieve a wealthy material life. This reflects the Confucian philosophy that emphasizes spiritual realm over material pursuit.
Origin Story
During the Warring States period, there was a man named Yan Ying in the state of Qi. He was upright and honest, and never coveted wealth. Once, Duke Jinggong of Qi gave him a lot of gold and silver treasures, but Yan Ying firmly refused. He said, "A ruler should govern with virtue and not just think about money. If one covets wealth, one will lose the people’s hearts, and the country will be difficult to govern." Later, under his rule, Qi became prosperous, and the people lived in peace and contentment. Yan Ying’s deeds have been passed down to this day, and they have become a model of "wei ren bu fu".
