Origin Story
During the Spring and Autumn Period, a disciple named Zigong asked Confucius: "Teacher, if someone wrongs me, how should I treat them?" Confucius replied: "Repay injustice with justice, and kindness with kindness." Zigong did not understand and further asked: "What does it mean to repay injustice with justice, and kindness with kindness?" Confucius explained: "If someone wrongs you, use reason to convince them, and follow the principle of justice; but if someone has done good to you, you should repay them with sincere kindness." Zigong nodded thoughtfully. Confucius added: "When dealing with people, you should always maintain a kind heart. Only by repaying kindness with kindness can you win the respect and trust of others." From then on, Zigong kept his teacher's teachings in mind and repaid kindness with kindness in his dealings with others, winning widespread praise.
