以铢程镒 yǐ zhū chéng yì To measure an yi with a zhu

Explanation

Using the extremely light zhu and the extremely heavy yi for comparison, it is used as a metaphor to illustrate the extreme disproportion between light and heavy, or the comparison between extremely dissimilar things.

Origin Story

Once upon a time, there was a scholar who was going to take the imperial examination. On the way, he met a fortune teller. The fortune teller looked at his face and said, "Although you have great talent, you are too arrogant and easily underestimate your opponents, which will ultimately lead to your failure." The scholar was very upset and thought: "My literary skills are outstanding, my articles are comparable to those of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan. How can I fail?" Then he took out the poems and essays he had carefully written to show to the fortune teller. After reading it, the fortune teller smiled slightly and said, "Your articles are good, but you focus too much on technique and neglect the depth of the content. This is like weighing an yi with a zhu, although it has its strengths, it is not enough to convince others." After listening, the scholar fell into thought and began to reflect on his shortcomings.
