Origin Story
During the late Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang led his troops against the Yuan Dynasty and after fierce battles, finally achieved a decisive victory. After conquering Nanjing, Zhu Yuanzhang and his general Xu Da changed into civilian clothes and took a boat across the river. A boatman recognized them and excitedly shouted: "The sacred emperor is protected by six dragons, the general is imposing from all sides!" This shout echoed across the river, in the boatman's eyes, Zhu Yuanzhang and Xu Da were imposing and powerful. Later, Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, and in order to commend this boatman for his ability to recognize talent, he specially rewarded him. This story has been passed down to this day and became the origin of the idiom "eight-sided imposing manner".
