One day, the son of a wealthy merchant committed a crime and was arrested. The merchant, relying on his wealth and power, repeatedly pleaded for leniency, hoping to save his son from punishment. But he was flatly refused each time by Li Ming. Li Ming said: "All are equal before the law; I cannot condone injustice because you are a wealthy merchant. Your son committed a crime and should receive the punishment he deserves." When the merchant saw that Li Ming was determined, he finally left in frustration. After this incident spread, the people admired Li Ming's fairness and impartiality even more. Li Ming thus became the embodiment of justice in the hearts of the people, a model of honest officials.
