Origin Story
During the Warring States period, the Wei and Zhao armies clashed. The Wei army occupied advantageous terrain, encircling the Zhao army in a narrow valley. The Wei general commanded, "Close the gates and beat the dogs! Attack them fiercely!" The Wei soldiers, high in morale, launched a fierce attack on the Zhao army, which was routed and eventually annihilated. In this battle, the smaller Wei army won a decisive victory. This was due to their clever use of terrain and the adoption of the strategy known as "closing the door to beat the dog," which involved controlling the enemy within their own encirclement before destroying them completely. From that point onwards, the idiom "closing the door to beat the dog" has been used to describe the effective control and elimination of an opponent.
