听之任之 to leave it alone
Explanation
It means to ignore something and let it develop naturally.
Origin Story
Once upon a time, in a small mountain village, lived an elderly farmer. He had an orchard with many fruit trees and abundant fruits. However, every year during harvest season, some fruits would be pecked by birds or damaged by wind and rain. Other farmers in the village would try their best to protect their fruits, such as setting up bird nets and building windbreaks. But this old farmer was different; he always silently watched, letting the birds peck and the wind and rain wreak havoc, never interfering. The villagers were puzzled and repeatedly advised him to take measures to protect his fruits to avoid greater losses. The old farmer always smiled and said, “Let nature take its course; what is meant to come will come, and what is meant to go will go. Too much intervention may backfire.” Year after year passed, and although the old farmer’s orchard suffered some losses each year, the overall harvest was still good. Moreover, more birds appeared in his orchard, and the chirping of various birds filled the small mountain village with unlimited vitality. Later, people gradually understood the old farmer’s philosophy of life: for some things, letting nature take its course can lead to unexpected results. There’s no need to interfere in everything, as excessive intervention can backfire and disrupt the laws of nature.
