Explanation
Originally, it referred to frivolous discussions about women's appearance. Now, it also means to arbitrarily criticize people or things, with a derogatory meaning.
Origin Story
In ancient China, there was a talented scholar named Li Bai. He often criticized people around him, relying on his talent. Once, at a poetry gathering, he saw a beautiful young woman and couldn't help but whisper in her ear, judging her clothes and appearance in frivolous words. An older poet couldn't stand it and stepped forward to advise, “Mr. Li Bai, while your talent is indeed admirable, criticizing others is not the act of a gentleman. A woman's beauty lies in her inner temperament, not in her outward appearance. Gentlemen should value the inner rather than the outer, and avoid frivolity.” Li Bai felt ashamed and since then restrained his frivolous habits, focusing more on self-cultivation and respecting others.
