Origin Story

During the Three Kingdoms period, Cao Cao originally intended to make Cao Zhi the crown prince, which aroused the jealousy of his eldest son, Cao Pi. After Cao Pi succeeded to the throne, he persecuted Cao Zhi many times and moved his residence three times. In 223 AD, Cao Pi summoned Cao Zhi, Cao Zhang, and Cao Biao, his brothers, to the capital for an audience. Because of various reasons, Cao Zhi was unable to attend, so he sent a letter to apologize and said with earnest words, “I have long waited for your enlightenment, and I am as eager as a hungry person for food or a thirsty person for water.” This shows how much Cao Zhi longed to see his brother Cao Pi, just like a hungry person longs for food or a thirsty person longs for water. This story not only shows Cao Zhi's respect for his brother but also vividly illustrates the meaning of “rú jī sì kě”.
