During the Warring States period, a prince from Han attempted to assassinate Qin Shi Huang but failed many times. He eventually retired to Xiapi and changed his name to Zhang Liang. One day, he met an old man on a bridge; the old man deliberately threw his shoe into the river. Zhang Liang, despite the dirt, retrieved it and helped him put it back on. The old man was deeply pleased, believing Zhang Liang was teachable and bestowed upon him the art of war. Zhang Liang diligently studied and eventually became an excellent strategist for Liu Bang.
