Once upon a time, there was a carpenter who received a commission to make a table for the county magistrate. As the magistrate valued his reputation, the table had to be exquisite, made of fine wood and with intricate carvings. The carpenter, however, was of average skill and wanted to slack off. As a result, the table was made with too little wood, the carvings were slow and the workmanship was poor, and the costs were indeed substantial.
