During the Tang Dynasty, there lived a scholar named Li Bai in Chang'an city. From a young age, he showed extraordinary talent, surpassing his peers. He was well-read, exceptionally skilled in poetry and calligraphy, capable of composing verses effortlessly, his style elegant and refined. Beyond this, he was also proficient in music, an accomplished painter, and a highly skilled player of Go. Once, Emperor Xuanzong hosted a grand banquet inviting the most talented individuals from across the land. Li Bai, too, was among the guests. At the banquet, the Emperor presented a superior couplet (of a Chinese distich), challenging the assembled scholars to compose an inferior couplet in response. For a moment, silence filled the hall; none dared to answer. Li Bai, unhurried, paused briefly before delivering a powerful inferior couplet that greatly pleased the Emperor, who showered him with praise. From that day forward, Li Bai's reputation for exceptional talent spread throughout China, making him a household name.
