Origin Story

Yu Yi, a famous general of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was a talented man who governed his troops skillfully and was loved by the people. However, he was rather disdainful of Du Hong and Yin Hao, two famous scholars of the time. He believed that these two men could only make empty speeches, had no practical talent and would only harm the state and the people. Therefore, he suggested to the court that the two men should be "shelved" and not be promoted. This action caused a great controversy at the time. Some people thought Yu Yi was too arbitrary, while others agreed with his approach. Whatever the case, the idiom "shu zhi gao ge" has been passed down to this day and has become a common idiom used by people.
