Origin Story
During the reign of Emperor Taizong in the Tang Dynasty, there was a scholar named Li Jing who traveled to the capital to take the imperial examinations. He encountered a heavy rainstorm and took shelter in a dilapidated temple. An old monk lived in the temple, and seeing Li Jing's tattered clothes, he offered him a simple meal. Later, Li Jing and the monk chatted amiably. After hearing Li Jing's aspirations, the monk said meaningfully, "Young man, the path of life is long; cherish every step and don't be discouraged by temporary setbacks." Then, the monk gave Li Jing an old book he had treasured for years. Li Jing thanked the monk profusely and left. However, on his way to the exams, Li Jing unexpectedly failed. He sat alone by a river, looking at the sparkling water. He recalled the monk's words and couldn't help but cry uncontrollably. He regretted his inadequate preparation and felt he had let down the monk's expectations. After a long while, he wiped away his tears, regained his confidence, and decided to work harder and retake the exam.
