物尽其用 make full use of everything
Explanation
The idiom "wù jìn qí yòng" means that all things that can be used should be utilized to the greatest extent possible. It emphasizes the importance of making full use of resources and avoiding any waste.
Origin Story
In a remote mountain village, lived an old woman named Li Dama. She had always been thrifty, and deeply understood the meaning of "wù jìn qí yòng". Her courtyard was small but filled with various vegetables and fruits; even the corners and crannies were utilized to grow herbs. Every year, the harvest of grains and vegetables was sufficient for her family, and the remainder were dried, stored, or processed into pickles, so that nothing was wasted. Li Dama was also skilled in sewing and patching; she transformed old clothes into new ones, and made rags and shoe pads from old cloth, until they were completely unusable. She conserved firewood; used residual heat for cooking, and collected rainwater for watering the vegetables, substantially saving water resources. The villagers all said that although Li Dama's family wasn't wealthy, their life was full and flavorful; all because she understood the virtue of "wù jìn qí yòng" and being thrifty.
