离群索居 to live in seclusion
Explanation
To leave a group or crowd and live alone. Describes a lonely or isolated lifestyle.
Origin Story
During the Spring and Autumn Period, the recluses Bo Yi and Shu Qi, two brothers, preferred to live in seclusion in the mountains rather than serve under the rule of King Zhou of Shang in order to uphold their ideals. They lived a frugal life gathering wild vegetables on Mount Shouyang and ultimately starved to death. Their secluded lifestyle demonstrated their noble integrity and firm belief, but it also reflected an extreme tendency toward individualism, ignoring the power of society and community to some degree.
