During the Warring States period, Zhao Wuling Wang, the monarch of the State of Zhao, ordered the adoption of the clothing and military skills of the northern nomadic Hu people to strengthen his nation and defend against foreign invasion. He led by example, wearing the light and agile Hu clothing, learning to ride and shoot arrows, and promoting this throughout the kingdom. This reform greatly enhanced the combat effectiveness of the Zhao army, making Zhao a powerful force among the seven warring states of the time.
