Origin Story

It is said that when Tang Sanzang and his disciples were on their way to the west to obtain the scriptures, they passed through a valley shrouded in clouds and mist. Sun Wukong used his magical powers to soar through the clouds and mist, leading the four disciples safely through the dangerous valley. Bajie, looking at the clouds and mist before him, was filled with envy and wanted to learn to soar through the clouds and mist as well. However, he ended up falling headfirst into the valley, covered in mud and looking quite embarrassed. Seeing this, Tang Sanzang smiled and said: ‘Wukong, look at Bajie. Soaring through the clouds and mist is not something that anyone can easily do. One must practice and cultivate one's abilities to be as light as a swallow and to move freely through the clouds and mist.’
