Origin Story
During the Warring States period, Mencius traveled among the feudal lords, endeavoring to promote his political ideals. Once, King Xuan of Qi asked him, "What is your opinion on governing the country?" Mencius spoke eloquently, expounding upon the concept of "benevolent governance" and illustrating how it could lead to national prosperity. King Xuan, after listening, seemed to understand only partially and was somewhat doubtful. Observing King Xuan's hesitation, Mencius declared forcefully, "If one wishes to bring peace to the world, who in this day and age is more suitable than I?" This bold declaration expressed not only his self-confidence in his abilities but also his sense of responsibility towards the nation's well-being. King Xuan, while not entirely accepting Mencius' suggestions, was nonetheless moved by his strong sense of responsibility and self-assurance.
