During the Three Kingdoms period in China, after the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei had won a great victory over Cao Cao in the Battle of Red Cliffs, they pursued their victory to Nanjun. The Wu general Gan Ning was ordered to occupy Yiling, but Cao Ren came with 5,000 troops to besiege it, constantly shooting arrows into the city. Gan Ning had only 2,000 soldiers, but he was not afraid, remaining calm and composed. He ordered his soldiers to collect the arrows of Cao's army, and at the same time sent messengers to break through the siege to ask Zhou Yu for reinforcements. Finally, Zhou Yu arrived with reinforcements and lifted the siege of Yiling. Gan Ning's composure not only boosted morale, but also demonstrated his outstanding military talent and psychological quality.
