走马看花 ride past and view flowers
Explanation
Originally referred to riding a horse and quickly admiring the blooming flowers along the roadside, now it is used to describe a cursory observation of things, which lacks deep understanding.
Origin Story
Once upon a time, there was a lame man named Guiliang who wanted to marry a beautiful woman. Meanwhile, a girl named Ye Qing, with a slight defect in her nose, longed for a handsome husband. Both sought the help of a matchmaker, Hua Han. Hua Han had an idea and decided to let them have a subtle “walk and see flowers” encounter at a blind date. On that day, Guiliang rode a tall horse and Ye Qing held a bouquet of flowers. They met in a garden. Guiliang's handsome appearance and elegant riding skills captivated Ye Qing at first sight. Ye Qing's grace with the flowers also made Guiliang fall in love with her at first sight. Thus, their “walk and see flowers” encounter resulted in a beautiful love story.
