从前，在一个偏僻的小山村里，住着一户人家，家中只有一个女儿，名叫小莲。小莲自幼体弱多病，父母对她呵护备至，生怕她受到一点风吹雨打。村里的人都说，小莲是家中的掌上明珠。可是，天有不测风云，小莲的父母在她年幼的时候相继去世了，小莲只能依靠年迈的奶奶生活。奶奶年事已高，行动不便，生活也十分艰难。小莲为了减轻奶奶的负担，每天天不亮就起床干活，上山砍柴，下田插秧，做饭洗衣，样样都干得勤勤恳恳。有一天，小莲上山砍柴时，突然下起了暴雨，山路泥泞不堪，小莲不小心摔倒了，弄伤了腿。奶奶知道后，心疼不已，赶紧下山去看望小莲，把小莲扶回了家。小莲躺在床上，听着窗外风雨交加的声音，心里五味杂陈，她感到自己的命运多么坎坷，但她并没有被困难吓倒，她依然坚强地活着。她相信，只要自己坚持不懈地努力，总有一天会苦尽甘来。
Once upon a time, in a remote mountain village, there lived a family with only one daughter, named Xiaolian. Xiaolian was frail and sickly since childhood, and her parents cherished her, fearing that she would be subjected to the slightest wind and rain. People in the village said that Xiaolian was the jewel of the family. However, fate is unpredictable.
