The story takes place during the Warring States period. A man named Yan Ganluo, driven by circumstances, became a robber. After being arrested by the authorities, he confessed his crime to Emperor Gaozu, claiming that he had resorted to crime because of "hunger and cold." Yan Ganluo's story makes people deeply understand the helplessness and suffering brought about by poverty, and also sparks reflection on the social inequality. In that turbulent era, wars were frequent and the people had a miserable life. Many people were displaced, without clothes and food. Hunger and cold were the common experience of many people. Yan Ganluo's fate was not an isolated case, it reflected the widespread poverty in society at that time. The response of Emperor Gaozu also indirectly illustrates the ruler's attention to the people's livelihood issues. The final outcome of Yan Ganluo is not recorded, but his confession to his crime, expressing his helpless state of survival, also caused deep reflection on that era. This story has been widely circulated in later generations, becoming a classic case that warns later generations, reminding people of the importance of paying attention to the people's livelihood and solving poverty problems.
